Poll worker safety
-
- Don’t work if you feel sick or have potentially been possibly exposed to Covid-19
- Wear a good fitting N95 or KN95 mask. If you have a respirator that is the best.
- Use a full-face shield. Wear glasses if that is not available. Safety glasses or goggles are great. Swim goggles are also good.
- Try not to touch your face.
- Distance from voters. Put 2 tables side by side and reach for ID. Use plexiglass shields to protect from breathing of voters if possible.
- Wear gloves. Change periodically. Have your own bottle if hand sanitizer. Use between glove changes.
- Wear a loose outer garment if possible. Consider it contaminated. Bring a paper bag with you. When you leave for the day take garment off inside out and put in bag. Then remove gloves and put on top. Put in trunk or back of car. Leave untouched in garage at least 24 hours and wash in laundry with towels. Don’t shake it out before washing.
- Clean your area with viricidal cleaners before polls open and on a regular basis, every half hour, or more if traffic is heavy, and especially if people are not wearing masks or coughing.
- Sneeze/cough into elbow.
- Use fans to keep the air circulating in the room, especially around workers tables. Droplets with virus won’t “hang” in moving air.
- Check temperatures of voters before coming in building and if they look sick do curbside voting. Encourage this if voters are a high-risk group but afraid to VBM.
- Bring your own water/food and do not share.
- Consider every surface in the bathroom contaminated. Don’t take your mask off. Close the toilet lid before flushing, if possible. If no lid, please don’t touch any surface. Wipe everything with a cleaning wipe before and after you touch it. Use hand sanitizer on return to your station.
- If you have serious chronic illnesses or any immunosuppression, please don’t volunteer.
